Introduction
We invite early career scholars interested in researching global Late Antiquity to take part in our initial Research Forum titled Ērān: Central and West Asia in the First Millennium CE’ which will take place at the University of Lille (France), 15 – 19 July 2024.
The first Research Forum is envisaged as a place for established scholars and junior researchers involved in the study of the Iranian, Sasanian, and Eastern Mediterranean world in the first millennium CE (mainly 200-800 CE, but broadly defined) to come together for a dialogue of ideas, research agendas, and methods. We aim to create a forum to connect senior scholars as both leaders of the field and as mentors with the junior scholars working on their PhD research or embarking on their post-doctoral and early career projects, both as part of a research institute or independently.
The Forum will last for 5 days and is set around the following themes:
- Historiography
- Languages
- Religions and Cultures
- Material and Visual Culture
- Economy and Administration
Early career scholars are encouraged to propose papers on their desired themes, although these might be organised across the week depending on the number of papers in each theme.
Eligibility and Attendance
- Advanced PhD students (writing stage)
- Postdoctoral researchers (both affiliated and independent)
There is no registration fee for the Forum.
Morning sessions (consisting of keynote lectures and seminars led by senior scholars) will be open to the general public free of charge, subject to availability of space.
Organisation
Each day will start with a keynote lecture by an expert in the field and will be followed by a seminar led by two senior scholars around the theme of the day. The Seminar can take either a teaching format or a discussion session around a topic, as decided by the senior scholars who lead it.
Among the confirmed speakers are: Touraj Daryaee, Simcha Gross, Charles Häberl, Albert de Jong, Judith Lerner, Eve McDonald, Stephen Rapp, Eberhard Sauer, Nikolaus Schindel. More senior scholars will be confirmed later.
The afternoon workshop sessions are organised around pre-circulated research papers, in any stage of development, from junior scholars, according to the theme of the day. In these workshops, which are limited only to the participants, junior scholars will have an opportunity to present their research and discuss it with their peers and with senior scholars in a safe environment. Papers will need to be circulated in advance as a condition of participation.
In each session a junior scholar will make a brief 10-15-minutes presentation emphasing the points which they particularly want to discuss and on which to receive feedback. A 45-minutes workshop style discussion involving all of the participants will follow each paper. The purpose is not to present completed, conference-style research papers, but to introduce the audience to your research questions and methods.
